Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common reason for abdominal discomfort.
Symptoms
- Abdominal pain gets relieved after defecation
- Looser stool during pain onset
- More frequent stool at onset of pain
- Feeling of incomplete emptying
- Abdominal distension
- Mucus during rectum
Alarming features
IBS does not present with the following manifestations and is suggestive of alternate pathology
- Blood in stool
- Family history of Inflammatory bowel disease
- Fever
- Weight loss
- Chronic diarrhoea
- Progressive dysphagia
Diagnosis
Patient with IBS-specific symptoms in absence of alarming symptoms indicates IBS
Treatment
- Antispasmodics
- Antidiarrhoeal
- Antidepressants and anxiolytics
- Laxatives
- Antibiotics
