Peptic ulcer disease

Peptic ulcer is the ulceration within the GIT mucosa as a result of excessive secretion of gastric acid.

Common sites for peptic ulcer disease are stomach and duodenum.

Common causes

• H pylori infection

• NSAIDs

• Hypercalcemia

• Cirrhosis

• Renal failure

• Cigarette smoking

• Hypersecretory conditions such as gastrinoma

• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Symptoms

• Upper abdominal pain after taking meals

• Pain radiating to the back

• Bleeding ulcer causes blood in vomiting or black stool

• Severe abdominal pain in presence of ulcer perforation

Diagnosis

• Upper GI endoscopy is indicated for peptic ulcers

• Biopsy to determine presence of H. pylori in the gastric antrum

Treatment

• Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI)

• H pylori eradication
