Esophageal stricture

Esophageal stricture is the narrowing of esophagus lumen that causes discomfort while eating food (dysphagia).

Causes

• Ingestion of acidic foods

• Post-surgery response

• Gastroesophageal reflux disease

• Drug induced

• Tuberculosis

• Esophageal cancer

Symptoms

• Dysphagia for solids is the most common symptom

Diagnosis

• Diagnosis is confirmed by endoscopy and biopsy

Treatment

• Treatment depends on the underlying factor. Therapy involves medical intervention, surgery and endoscopic dilatation.

Esophageal webs

Esophageal webs are membranes identified with the lumen of esophagus and mostly observed in upper esophagus

Symptoms

• Patient may remain asymptomatic or experience dysphagia

Treatment

• Endoscopic dilatation
