Celiac disease is the disease affecting the small intestinal mucosa. It causes small bowel dysfunction after of gluten ingestion. Gluten is present in wheat.

Symptoms

  • Diarrhoea
  • Bloating
  • Anaemia
  • Stunted growth
  • Amenorrhea
  • Infertility
  • Impotence

Diagnosis

  • Serological testing
  • IgA anti-tissue transglutaminase
  • IgA antiendomysial antibodies
  • Antigliadin antibodies
  • UGI endoscopy and small intestinal biopsy demonstrates presence of villous atrophy

Treatment

  • Withdrawal of gluten rich foods such as wheat, oat, barley, and rye from the diet
  • Dietary supplements
  • Steroids are helpful in critically ill patients
